Baby Pigs Care By Kum Martin

If you have seen the movie Babe, you know how charming and cute baby pigs can be. When looking for piglets, make sure you find a responsible breeder who does not believe in selling the piglets until they have weaned from the mother. Usually the weaning takes place by the sixth or the eighth week.

If you get a younger piglet, it will not know how to eat on its own. In addition, it will miss its mother and siblings. It will be scared and will be confused and lonely. In such a circumstance, make a play pen for the piglet so that it feels safe and secure. Keep the temperature of the play pen at ninety degrees Fahrenheit. This is because piglets do not generate body heat until they are two weeks old. Also, wrap the baby pig in a towel to keep it warm. Have a couple of soft toys around for the piglet to sleep with. Take a pillow case and place some dried beans into it and tie the top. Heat this in a microwave and place the warm pillow case next to the piglet. It will give it an illusion of being with its mother.

As the piglet is still small and cannot eat normally, feed it with goat's milk and/or baby rice cereal. There are even pig pellets available that can be crushed in a blender and added to the goat's milk and fed to the piglet. This will ensure that the piglet get vitamins and minerals in the liquid form.

Slowly you will have to teach the piglet to eat from a bowl. So, do not get worried if you see the piglet putting its nose into the bowl of food. This is the way the piglet tastes the food and if it likes it, it will eat it.
Remember, pig make wonderful pets that are quite affectionate to their owners. Also, they are very intelligent animals. With a piglet, especially a one that has been separated from its mother too early, you will require some patients in the first few months.

Harness and Lead Training Tips

Get a proper harness that is designed for Potbellied pigs. They are available
online and on Ebay. Do not tie a rope on it, or use a dog lead or any type of
harness that is not designed especially for pigs.

*Never rush the process.
*Make sure the measurements are exact.
*Never tie your pig up with the harness.
*Give it time. Pigs connect being tied up with being trapped. Do not scare it.
*At first do it indoors, away from other pets and children.
*Give it plenty of treats when it accepts the harness.

What Size will my Pig be?

One thing is for certain, they will not be the same size as Farm pigs, but they
will grow much bigger than your cat. A full grown Vietnamese potbellied pig
can be anywhere from 100 to 250 pounds and not be overweight, and is still
considered a miniature potbellied pig. On average, one will have a pig that
weight between 100 and 170 pounds, exactly like humans. This all depends of
course, on how you fed and exercise your pig. Overfeeding is the main reason
pigs develop health problems and die younger, so try to take care of this much
earlier on. Pigs will ask for food all the time and if you are inexperienced, you
will think they are hungry all the time. Remember who is Boss! On the flip side,
underfeeding them can lead to just as many health problems, so be aware and
feed them right.

What do Pot Belly Pigs Eat?

Glad you asked...

If you have a pet pot bellied pig, then pig chow is the very best food you can give them. You can also feed them fruits and vegetables, such as corn, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, etc. but you do not want to limit them only to this diet, as they require much more than what fruits & veggies can provide. A definite no-no is any other type of animal food (cat or dog food, for example), or human food, as this will cause them to become unhealthy, obese, and give them problems down the road.
